DC’s first farmers market Summer Meal Site
In 2015, Community Foodworks was the first farmers market to offer free food that replaced school breakfast and lunch during the summer months. This program helped bring families and children at risk of hunger to the farmers market, where they could discover our access and support programs. The site also helpd build awareness of the Summer Meals program and its other sites among CFW’s regular benefit-customers. The 2015 pilot was made possible through collaboration with DC Hunger Solutions, summer meals organizer, and CentroNia, healthy school food producer.
In 2016, Community Foodworks will bring summer meals to our Ward 5 farmers markets and upgrade from snack distribution to full supper service.
